Safety and Prevention
February 17, 2025
After a snow storm, your main concern might be removing the snow from your driveway and walkway, but here a few other safety concerns that may require attention:
- Clear the snow from all emergency exits from your home, whether that's the back door or side door, you want to make sure that all have clear paths that can be used to exit your home in the case of an emergency. You never know which exits may become inaccessible.
- Take care when removing the snow off your deck or stairs. Make sure to add some abrasives or salt to avoid creating icy surfaces which can lead to accidents and falls.
- Make sure to clear the snow from the vents of combustion appliances, such as water heaters or furnaces, to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- If you notice a large snow accumulation on your roof, consider calling a professional to come take a look and remove it to prevent damage.
- While the City snow removal crews will remove the snow from fire hydrants, consider shovelling around it if you have one of your property to ensure rapid emergency response if needed.
Additionally, make sure to respect all snow removal regulations.
Let's all do our part to keep the City a safe place for all after this storm!
